Tegal City (Javanese: Hanacaraka: ꦠꦼꦒꦭ꧀, Pegon: تٓڮل, Hanzi: 直葛, Dutch: Tagal) is a city in Central Java Province, Indonesia. This city played a historic role as the origin of the Indonesian Marine Corps, as recorded in the establishment of Corps Mariniers at Naval Base IV of the Indonesian Navy (ALRI) in Tegal on November 15, 1945. Tegal City is bordered by Brebes Regency to the west, the Java Sea to the north, and Tegal Regency to the south and east. The city's founding date is April 12, 1580.
Tegal Regency (Javanese: Hanacaraka: ꦠꦼꦒꦭ꧀, Pegon: تٓڮل, translit. *Tagal*) is a regency located in the northwestern part of Central Java Province, Indonesia, covering an area of 878.79 square kilometers. As of mid-2024, the population of Tegal Regency is 1,727,497.
The regency's administrative capital is the district of Slawi. Before the establishment of Tegal City, the regency's capital was located in Tegal City, situated in the northwestern corner of the regency. However, Tegal City later became administratively separate from Tegal Regency and established itself as an independent region.
